Project Brief
To provide a modern, high specification, energy efficient and fully equipped multipurpose sports hall with ancillary changing rooms and teaching facilities.
Unique Challenges
- Proximity of Tems Beck, no surface water run-off from the site was allowed to flow into the beck and the beck had to be protected from potential contamination
- The site is situated between a public highway, the main school and the sports field therefore careful consideration had to be given to the movement of construction traffic and delivery vehicles
- The new Sports Hall had to join to an existing building
- A piled foundation solution was required
- A sustainable drainage system was required
- No vehicular access was available along the rear of the building making material handling very difficult
Design
The site is in a Conservation Area and on the edge of a National Park therefore the design had to be sympathetic and in keeping with the locality as well as meeting the needs of the school. SutCon worked closely with Squires and Brown Architects to design and address the planning issues as well as coming up with a functional and practical design for a prestigious state of the art sports hall. The hall is heated by underfloor heating throughout which is powered by a water source heat pump.

Construction
- Establish one way system in and out of the site, with suitable signage on approach roads to warn drivers of schoolchildren
- Remove all asbestos from existing building on the site
- Demolish existing building
- Site preparation and piling
- Foundations and drainage, including self attenuating permeable drainage system
- Erection of steel frame and fixing of cladding
- Laying of structural slab
- Building cavity walls
- Installation of underfloor heating pipes and manifolds
- Laying of fine tolerance screed
